The fighting between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces has cost thousands of lives, redrawn borders and brought Ukraine’s economy and currency to its knees. Away from the front lines, the residents of Kiev and Lviv are still recovering from violent protests that erupted in the two cities last year.
